What is AI-generated?
AI stands for Artificial Intelligence.
AI-generated means that it is something made by Artificial Intelligence.
Artificial Intelligence is when a computer is able to perform human like actions. This includes speech recognition, decision making and many other human actions that computers don’t usually perform.
In this example an AI-generated system wrote a chapter of Harry Potter. This meant a computer using a predictive text program created this story without human involvement.
How did it write Harry Potter?
Jamie Brew created the predictive text program that wrote the 3-page chapter in Harry Potter. You can read it here.
He used the 7 Harry Potter books written by JK Rowling to train the predictive text program. This enabled it to analyse how it was written and pick up on the characters names and some of their characteristics.
While the chapter doesn’t make the most sense, you cannot deny it fits in with the style of writing. If it made sense, I don’t think people would be able to tell the difference between it and JK Rowling’s previous work.
The main difference I found in this 3 page chapter to the other books is that JK Rowling probably wouldn’t let Harry or Ron eat Hermione or her family.
After reading the chapter you should be able to tell that it is different to most predictive texts we know. This chapter had multiple writes who put the text through a range of algorithmic suggestions and authorial discretion. Putting it through many different systems meant it was able to be unique to other predictive text programmes. This one was able to add in adjectives and keep the normal writing stye that is used when writing fanfiction.
